Voice AI
GPT-Live 1 or ElevenLabs?
When a customer calls, we want the conversation to feel natural and their request to move forward. That led me to try GPT-Live 1: could we improve our European Portuguese customer service while building on the work we already have in ElevenLabs?
Where ElevenLabs has an advantage.
ElevenLabs provides the platform where we build our agents. GPT-Live 1 is a voice conversation model we want to integrate. That is the biggest difference: a move means adapting some of the work the platform already handles for us.
- A ready-made foundation. Agent configuration, telephony connections and tools for reviewing conversations in one system.
- Choice of language model. We can choose between different language models to interpret requests and prepare responses.
- Work we have already done. We know the platform and have instructions and integrations running on it. That matters when weighing the effort of a move.
The trade-off is reliance on the platform’s features, terms and pricing. Voice quality also depends on the particular model and voice we choose.
What attracts us to GPT-Live 1.
In our initial tests, I clearly preferred the conversation to our ElevenLabs configuration. The responses felt more natural. That first impression gives us a good reason to test further.
- Listening while speaking. GPT-Live 1 can listen and speak at the same time. We want to see how that helps when a customer interrupts to correct or add information.
- Lower voice costs. The component we are comparing costs over 35% less. Savings across the whole operation also depend on the reasoning model, tools and telephony.
The additional work falls to us: connecting the conversation to our systems, handling failures and monitoring what happens. The voice model alone does not replace the entire platform we use.
The European Portuguese challenge.
For English-speaking businesses, the choice depends on the voice, features and integrations they need. Our work in Portugal adds a more demanding requirement: natural European Portuguese.
We have not yet found available voices in ElevenLabs v3 that meet our expectations for European Portuguese. The options we found convincing sound closer to Brazilian Portuguese.
That distinction matters when an assistant answers calls from Portuguese customers. The accent, expressions and rhythm need to feel familiar.
Building on what we already have.
Our operation already runs on the ElevenLabs platform. A migration would mean adapting our existing instructions and integrations, then checking that the new setup handles the same tasks reliably.
We will compare both systems with the same requests: understanding a Portuguese name, handling an interruption, looking up information and routing a call. We want to measure response times, errors and cost per completed task. The ElevenLabs configuration will remain available while we evaluate the alternative.
The comparison continues.
Our first impression favors GPT-Live 1. In the next article, we’ll show how both systems perform on the same tasks.
